Day 12 — Does Ethereum Store Coins the Same Way Bitcoin Does?

Bitcoin and Ethereum keep score differently

The Ethereum account model is different from Bitcoin’s UTXO model. Both move value, but they track ownership in different ways.

Bitcoin feels like digital notes. Ethereum feels more like account balances.

This difference matters because Ethereum also runs smart contracts.

How Bitcoin’s UTXO model works

Bitcoin tracks unspent transaction outputs. A UTXO is like a spendable chunk of value.

If you spend part of a chunk, the whole chunk is used. Then a new chunk comes back as change.

This model is strict and easy to verify. However, it can feel unusual at first.

How Ethereum accounts work

Ethereum keeps a shared state of accounts. Each account can have a balance and other data.

There are user accounts and contract accounts. User accounts are controlled by private keys. Contract accounts are controlled by code.

When a transaction runs, Ethereum updates this shared state.

Why Ethereum chose this model

Smart contracts need more than simple coin movement. They may store balances, rules, votes, loans, or token records.

The account model makes that easier to express. It gives applications a shared place to keep state.

The takeaway

Bitcoin asks which outputs are still spendable. Ethereum asks what each account’s current state looks like.

Both designs are useful. They simply solve different problems.
